Suzuki poised to rock the SUV market with the 2018 Vitara

Modern, sophisticated, safe, and efficient

For more than three decades, the Vitara has been known for its performance and inherent off-road capabilities. With the launch of this all-new generation, Suzuki PH re-introduces a sub-compact SUV that encourages individuality, personalization, safer driving, and significant fuel efficiency.

Packed with technological innovations, the Vitara has upgraded the heritage design of Suzuki’s well-loved SUV by using modern elements. “Equipped with the longest, and widest dimension in its class with the best radius performance, the features of the new Vitara are aimed at providing the best value in terms of design, performance, and fuel efficiency,” said SPH Automobile Division General Manager Shuzo Hoshikura. “Through these, we believe we will enhance the Filipino driving experience, which is at the core of bringing drivers closer to the Suzuki Way of Life.”

Staying faithful to its original styling, the Vitara’s exterior design exudes a strong, sophisticated presence by way of the modernized Suzuki SUV signature clamshell bonnet. Side press lines give it a rugged look, while a smooth roofline gives it strong aerodynamic performance; all this is complemented by the rear design, giving it an overall stable look. The Vitara is also the longest and widest in its class taping in at 4,175mm and 1,775mm, respectively. Giving it a commanding presence on the road is its 185mm ground clearance.

For the GLX model, DRLs with vertically-placed LEDs and energy-saving LED headlamps come standard. The GL and GL+ models will be sporting projector halogen headlamps. The GLX will be shod with 17-inch alloys, 16-inchers for the GL+, and 16-inch steelies with full caps for the GL.

Looking at the interior, muscular contours and a sporty feel bring the motif together. Linear designs combined with round air outlets and a round clock results in a cohesive, overall feel. On the steering wheel, paddle shifters and audio controls also come standard. Entertainment is provided by way of the new Vitara’s Infotainment audio system. Hands-free connectivity, navigation, Bluetooth audio, and a USB port are all included. For the GLX variant, a 10-inch, wifi and MirrorLink-capable Android-based system is included – the biggest in its class – while the GL+ and GL variants enjoy it just the same with a 7-inch screen. With luggage being a main concern for this vehicle segment, the Vitara stows up to 375L, expandable by lowering the luggage board or by removing the luggage area dividers. For larger cargo, folding the seats provides an impressive 710L of space.

In the comfort department, the Vitara is equipped with cruise control, a speed limiter, ultrasonic sensors in the front and rear bumpers, a reverse camera, an automatic lighting system, and automatic rain-sensing wipers. As for safety, highlighted in the GLX is the 6-point airbag system that is comprised of dual, curtain, and side airbag for  both the driver and passenger, giving greater protection inside the cabin. ESP or Electronic Stability Control automatically controls the engine’s torque and brake application to ensure that the driver maintains directional control. Hillhold Control is also included, which prevents the Vitara from rolling backward while on an uphill slope. Cabin strength is provided by an impact-absorbing design and in the event of a collision, and in the event of a frontal impact, the brake pedal release system limits the pedal’s movement toward the driver, minimizing injury. For further protection, the Vitara’s Total Effective Control Technology (TECT) absorbs impact and the seatbelts use force limiters to lower the impact on the passenger or driver’s chest.

Powered by a 1.6-liter engine and with the lightest curb weight in its category, the Vitara brings superior efficiency. This is achieved by milling 115hp at 6,000rpm and a staggering 156Nm of torque at 4,400rpm, the best in its class. This mated to a 6-speed AT system ensures better response, and better fuel economy. All variants of the Vitara will be front-wheel drive.
