Coinciding with the launch of the Auto Asia dealership, SsangYong Motor Berjaya Motor Philippines introduces two new models to the pickup and mid-sized 7-seater segment: the Musso Grand pickup truck and the all-new Rexton.
We first saw the SsangYong Rexton way back in 2001, which was the brand’s first attempt at the mid-sized SUV segment. Now with four generations tucked under its belt, the SsangYong Rexton is ready to shake things up, aiming to establish itself as a serious contender alongside established products like the Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Montero Sport, and Nissan Terra.
Unlike more traditional pickup-based SUVs where the platform is designed for pickup trucks and applied to SUVs, the SsangYong Rexton’s body-on-frame platform goes the other direction, as it was designed from the ground up to be used for an SUV with off-road capabilities. Combining this with its widest-in-class width and wheelbase at 1,950mm and 2,855mm, respectively results in an SUV with a spacious cabin and a plush ride.
Available in both 4×4 and 4×2 variants, the SsangYong Rexton features ventilated and heated premium brown leather seats, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for easy device connectivity and safer driving, and a 7-inch Super Vision instrument cluster. The 4×4 variant gets 20-inch alloys, while the 4×2 version gets 18-inch alloy wheels. For safety, the 4×4 variant receives 6 airbags, while the 4×2 gets 2 airbags. Both variants are powered by a 2.2-liter diesel motor with an e-VGT Variable Geometry Turbocharger that puts out 181 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission.
SsangYong, thru its official Philippine distributor SsangYong Berjaya Motor Philippines, offers the Rexton with a 5-year or 100,000 km warranty and a free 3-year Periodic Maintenance Service (PMS) schedule and a service interval of 6 months or 10,000 kms. The newly-launched Mobile Service Van is also available to perform the PMS on the Rexton within 100 kms of any SsangYong dealership.
The SsangYong Rexton 2.2L 4×4 AT is priced at PhP 2,230,000, while the Rexton 2.2L 4×2 AT is priced at PhP 1,730,000.
SsangYong Musso Grand
Accompanying the current SsangYong Musso pickup is the Musso Grand – a larger, more rugged variant that complements the luxurious, plush ride offered by the Musso.
With a length of 5405mm, the SsangYong Musso Grand adds almost a foot, or 310mm, to the Musso, making it the longest offering in the segment. Besides the added length, its cargo capacity has been increased to 1,025 kg, and extra length has been added to the cargo bed to provide the biggest volume in the 1-ton pick-up in the market today.
With the introduction of the Musso Grand, SsangYong Philippines now offers buyers two rear suspension setups, depending on the pick-up they choose, with comfortable coil springs for the short wheelbase Musso, or a heavy-duty leaf spring suspension for the Musso Grand.
Using the same platform as the 7-seater SsangYong Rexton which was designed with comfort as a priority, the Musso Grand boasts of a more comfortable ride than the competition despite the use of a leaf spring suspension, even with an empty bed.
The SsangYong Musso Grand comes in 4×4 and 4×2 variants. The top-of-the-line 4×4 variant features a sunroof, brown leather upholstery with ventilation for its 8-way power adjustable driver and 6-way power adjustable passenger seats, a deck pillar, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a 3.5-inch Super Vision instrument cluster, and front and rear A/C vents. In terms of safety, the 4×4 model also gets Active Rollover Protection, along with Hill Descent Control and an Electronic Stabilization Program.
All variants are powered by the same 2.2-liter engine as the Rexton, mated to either 6-speed automatic transmission, or 6-speed manual transmission, and receive the same warranty and service benefits.
The SsangYong Musso Grand 2.2L 4×4 AT is priced at PhP 1,650,000, while the 4×2 AT can be had at PhP 1,230,000, with the most affordable variant, the 4×2 MT priced at PhP 1,180,000.
