2017 BMW X1 xDrive20d xLine – Baby’s got serious game

Big heart and ability in a small package

Third time’s the charm; after spending considerable time in a US-spec BMW X1 xDrive28i last year and with a still fairly fresh domestic experience with its diesel alternative, the X1 xDrive20d, I requested for additional seat time in what I truly believe is the very best premium compact crossover currently sold in the Philippines. The last time I was in the X1 xDrive20d, I deliberately spent most of the test period during the media event as a rear passenger, which is very rare for me.

The rear seats of the all-new X1 are dramatically better than the previous model in both form and function. I like the fact that you can also recline each bank of the rear bench too for even more ride comfort. This time around, once again at the helm, we took the family on a weekday excursion as we would if I had owned the baby X5 as I explored farm land in my home province of Batangas. My sons who joined us on this journey were our 3-year old in a car seat and our 200+ pound 16-year old, both would have had their own reasons for complaining about the trip yet both rested well without any protests whatsoever though we recognized that given this scenario the X1 is truly a 4-seater for adults especially on longer trips out of the city.

The X1 proved to be as effortless and as usable as expected even we went pretty deep into open fields of raw land. I never lost grip and the xDrive system engaged fluidly without any drama. With so much healthy torque on tap in a nimble platform the X1 performed like a happy goat on a trail without ever compromising ride comfort. It simply routinely functioned as instructed with ample ground clearance and realistic attack angles in the dirt.

After a week of testing, under every realistic Philippine road condition in the city and out-of-town, I am reconfirming my stand that the all-new BMW X1 is the very best in its class. The potential fuel range exceeding 1,000 kilometers on a single full tank of premium grade diesel, its ability to spiritedly slingshot around corners, and the generous dynamic abilities are all bonuses in a premium crossover where you truly get what you pay for.
